Becoming a Lanzarote local
Well, now with the cancellation of Semaine Olympique Francaise de Voile in April (The French Olympic week - Hyeres regatta) it looks like I am almost a resident in Lanzarote. I am now eyeing the increasing number of new Covid-19 cases in Bulgaria, where we are meant to have the ILCA Europeans in May and wondering if that regatta will also be cancelled. We have been so lucky here in the Canary Islands where we have been able to continue to race and train in a very safe way.
With so few official sailing competitions so far, this year seems to have been all about training at home (and being careful not to overtrain) and of course the America’s cup. Perhaps worth a mention, some of the grinders are ex Laser sailors. Although we have seen some delay in New Zealand I am confident by the end of the month we will know who is holding the precious cup.
It seems now is the time of year when many people are focusing on their fitness. Indeed, I recently wrote 2 very different fitness articles. One for the UKLA (UK Laser class association) and one for Yachts and Yachting magazine.
For the UKLA we took the big picture, what are the essential elements of fitness and by this I mean the elements you cannot do without. Training, nutrition and rest… if one of these is seriously deficient then it is more or less impossible to make fitness gains. Photos taken of Olympic Gold Medallist Lijia Xu CHN.
For Yachts and Yachting we looked at the small picture. Training from home. Something people are no doubt doing a lot of at the moment but also I guess people will do more in the future after getting into the habit over the various lock downs. Stay safe and carry on sailing (where permitted)!
